In progress | “Dog on a Walk #1″ | 8″x8” | oil on hardboard
I hope you had a wonderful weekend! I spent a good chunk of mine standing in front of my easel and experimenting with my brand new set of oil paints (check it out!) Add in a few cups of coffee, a Valentine’s Day date, and the new season of House of Cards, and it was basically the best weekend ever.
I wanted to share some exciting news from my studio, and then I have a big, personal favor to ask of you and your pooch.
The exciting news: I’ve been asked to participate in this spring’s Gallery Night here in Madison! My fave doggie shop Bad Dog Frida has asked to display my work during this super fun city-wide event. And I couldn’t possibly be more excited.
I’ve been thinking for months, months, about what kind of series I want to create for the event. I considered a collection of dog-themed still lifes, but I’m not sure how many water bowls and tennis balls I can paint before I lose my sanity. Then I considered doing paintings of dogs on chairs. But do you know how hard it is to get pictures of dogs on chairs? Very hard. Then finally, last week, I stumbled upon an idea I was really enthusiastic about. Ready?
My new series is called: “Dog on a Walk”

The plan is to paint 15 small scenes that capture the most exciting part of every dog’s day. There will be dogs wagging, dogs sniffing, dogs that are just happy to be in the sun.
The big favor: Here’s the thing. I’ve been running around Madison with my camera, accosting strangers with dogs and begging them to let me do a quick photo-shoot. It’s starting to get weird, and I’m worried I’ll soon end up with a reputation as the crazy dog-stalker of Dane County Parks.
So that’s where you come in. I’m asking you guys (my top-notch clients, friends and followers) to submit photos of you and your dog on a walk that I could use as references for the paintings in this series. I love the idea of capturing the universal experience of a dog on a walk from all corners of the continent. But wait, there’s something in it for you too! If you send in a photo and I use it for a painting in this series, I’ll mail you a full-size fine art print as a thank you. Think you might be interested? Check out the details at the bottom.
What you see here are some pictures of the first three “in progress” paintings of the series.
And if you know anyone else who might be interested in participating, I would be eternally grateful if you would spread the word.
Thanks so much!

- Ideally, I’m looking for photos with interesting backgrounds (natural, urban, wherever you walk your dog!) that are taken outdoors in natural light. Candid is preferred to posed.
- Email your photo or photos to email@example.com and let me know the name of your dog.
I hope to hear from you soon!
