Today, I think I’ll be different

I have a history of shaking things up whenever I get too comfortable. Fact.

At various times, this has manifest as moving across the country for love, quitting my desk job in a rage, signing up for culinary school on a whim, and putting up a website to sell my paintings (just to see if it would work).

Each time I veer off in a deliciously-new direction, I get a thrill. I mean, who doesn’t? Possibility, clean slates, new horizons…heck, that stuff can get addicting.

But now that many pieces of my life have fallen into place, I’ve had to get more creative in order to get that same thrill. At this point, I’ve found a partner I’m crazy about and I’ve finally identified that career that makes my heart do a happy jig. So where can a girl turn to get that buzz of newness, to revel in the delight of calling an audible?

She can turn to the small things, of course.

This past week, I’ve been trying out a new mini mantra. It was just a little something that popped into my head last Monday, and it has been tagging along in my brain all week long.

“Today, I think I’ll be different.”

Instead of rerouting my entire life, I’m looking to shake it up on the small scale. For instance:

Today, I’m going to try that new marketing strategy I read about.

Today, I think I’ll buy that neon pink sports bra, instead of another gray one.

Today, I’m going to go nuts with the yellow paint.

Today, I’m taking a full hour off for lunch.

Today, I think I’ll try that Booty Beat Dance class at my gym, instead of spending another 30 minutes on the treadmill.

Today, I’ll be patient.

Today, I’m going to see it from his perspective.

I don’t exactly know how my experiment will end. Whether my small daily acts of doing things differently will quench my thirst for a seismic shift. But something tells me that I’m on the right track.

Here’s to hoping we all have a different kind of week.

{Since it’s something I wanted to be reminded of each day, I made it into a computer desktop. Somehow the little green elephant seemed to sum up my feelings perfectly. If it speaks to you too, feel free to download it below.}

  1. Thank you, I have put the picture on my desktop and will also try taking those little steps to change. I find it far too easy to get stuck in little ruts so hopefully this will remind me not too. What a lovely, helpful post!

    • Thank you, and it’s lovely to meet you! It’s always challenging for me to find a balance between keeping things fresh and keeping things steady. I’m hoping my little green elephant will help to keep me on the right path :)

Hmm. Maybe I’ll work out a little green elephant day myself–thank you!

    • Thanks! :)

  3. Just changed my background — love it! It was time for something different, in the computer screen department. ;)

    • Yay! I love thinking about my little green elephant gracing computer screens coast to coast!
